A Gentil Carioca is pleased to present Bum-bum Paticumbum Prugurundum, our inaugural group show in our new space in São Paulo. The gallery arrives in the city with Aleta Valente, Ana Linnemann, Arjan Martins, Cabelo, Jarbas Lopes, João Modé, José Bento, Laura Lima, Marcela Cantuária, Maria Laet, Maria Nepomuceno, Maxwell Alexandre, OPAVIVARÁ!, Renata Lucas, Rodrigo Torres and Vivian Caccuri.

"Batuco, logo existo (I drum therefore I am)", phrase said by Luiz Antonio Simas, Brazilian composer, historian and Babalawo in the Odu Ifá, can be as universal as the quote of the French philosopher and mathematician, René Descartes “I think, therefore I am”.

Bum-bum Paticumbum Prugurundum, Gentil´s inaugural group show in São Paulo, brings the ethos of corporality in its narrative, and wishes to offer a knowledge that is not in the rationality of the Cartesian thought so defining the West, but rather expressed in a language of other writings, of drums and rhythms. The bodies of works and public visit the gallery space, reconfiguring the usual orthogonality of an exhibition. They are inspired by the drumming, by the street carnival block, by the circles of people in the square for great resolutions, which determine a rhythm of another physicality or logic.

Bum-bum paticumbum prugurundum works on the body/spirit, on balance, with balance. The works displayed in the exhibition space turn into a rhythmic temperance, distracting themselves in space, without an analytical logo, carried by the subjectivity of the drum sound that the title brings. Bum bum, the subjectivity of sounds, pa ti cum, the rhythm in the understanding of the body/heart that beats tum tum, cum bum... generates temperance, or excitement, calms down, settles down, wakes up, works the soul, heals, rethink prugurundum.

    "Bum-bum paticumbum prugurundum

O nosso samba minha gente é isso aí, é isso aí"

  • Many of you have already heard, spoken, sung this onomatopoeia mantra and treatise, mantreatise, Bum-bum Paticumbum Prugurundum, a samba by Império Serrano, crowned champion after a breathtaking parade in 1982, which brings in its samba plot strong criticisms of the direction that the carnival was becoming at the time. The samba plot spoke of the three different manifestations of samba that took place in Praça XI, Candelária and Marquês de Sapucaí in Rio de Janeiro at that time.

Bum-bum Paticumbum Prugurundum is an expression by composer Ismael Silva used to show how the beat of the deaf should be, which gave rise to the Samba rhythm as we know today. The samba plot was composed by Beto Sem Braço and Aloísio Machado and released in 1981.

In its origins in the terra brasilis (land of Brazil), Samba was a party by people of African descent that occurred in many forms in different parts of Brazil, not necessarily defining a specific rhythm, but according to master Luiz Antônio Simas, a festive gathering moved by song, rhythm, and dance. With the end of slavery there was an exodus of formerly enslaved people leaving Bahia for Rio de Janeiro, occupying the area around the center: the port area, Tiradentes square, Saara, it was the time of the parties at Tia Ciata's house, among other ‘samba aunts’, of samba masters such as Sinhô, Donga, Pixinguinha. At the same time, another exodus, coming from the Vale do Paraíba, arrived in the capital, settling in the Estácio region, this was the group of Ismael Silva, Bide, Marçal, Brancura and several Bambas. These two energies clashed, while the group from small Africa liked a Samba that was more maxixado, or de roda, Estácio's group wanted a Samba that would push the group, like the blocos ranchos (street group festivities), through the city, they liked fighting, to come into conflict with other groups, they wanted a rhythm that would allow the collective body to evolve, and thus Bum-bum Paticumbum Prugurundum was born.

  • Almost four decades after the year the lyrics were written, Ernesto Neto was in an agogô class with the master Scofa via messenger and they started a conversation, perhaps syncopated by master Simas who had already said "I drum therefore I am", about this very remarkable expression of Ismael Silva. They said: “…in the verse Bum-bum paticumbum prugurundum there is a treatise as important as the quote “I think therefore I am”, by the master Descartes, as well as the book Discourse on Method itself and several other philosophies that define the West and, consequently, modernity. There is a theory contained in it, a North. The language of drums and rhythms is as important as writing, but they are unwritable, as their speech is not intelligible by the mind, but by the body…” Thus, was born the original text Bum-bum paticumbum prugurundum by Ernesto Neto.

The Bum-bum paticundum prugurundum illustrates the thought of samba, afro-centered, where individual and collective are part of the same body, balancing, adding, contradicting, and converging.
