Overview

Today, the intense sedentary browsing on the net exposes the navigator to violent flows of classified information that need poetic resolution to be used on a daily basis. It is in this permanent unraveling that increasingly resembles the artisanal alchemical practices that the artist transits, between the material and the virtual, plastic and words, converted to binary systems to be consumed, almost like meat, in a fetishistic offering. Protein for a new cycle of miracles between inhaling and exhaling, dollars and loves, browsing without wasting time on the bit.

– Paulo Paes

Biography

A Brazilian artist, he was born on the outskirts of Guarulhos, São Paulo in 1993. He currently lives and works in the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Poet, visual artist, composer, performer, Edgar is a compulsive creator and his work overflows authenticity and freedom, going through various supports and segments of metalanguage and transmedia research.

His interest in art began in childhood, encouraged by his mother - Dona Maria, to create sculptures, drawings and painting on tiles. Edgar is not a mimetic, millimetric or metric being, but semiotic, semi-naked and raw. Multimedia artist who works with all kinds of ancestral and technological material, produces paintings, creates installations, performances, drawings, composes music, invents card games, writes books, produces films, games and NFTs.

There are ritualistic dimensions in his production, including current themes, such as violence and the Brazilian political scenario. In some of his works, he works on syncretism, combining influences from Yoruba culture and Russian numerology techniques. Indigenous futurism and the African diaspora make up his research repertoire and experiences from the universe of speculative fictions and the narrative temporal short circuit, an immersion in a specific and indomitable universe.

In 2023 he presents his first solo exhibition at A Gentil Carioca gallery in São Paulo. In 2022 took part in the group exhibitions “Nakoada – strategies for modern art” at Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro, “Parada 7 – Arte em Resistência” at Centro Municipal de Artes Hélio Oiticica and Centro Cultural Justiça Federal, Rio de Janeiro, and “A Trama da Terra que Treme” at A Gentil Carioca, São Paulo. In the same year was one of the recipients of FOCO Bradesco ArtRio Award, and performed the performance titled “Armadura” in Lausanne, Switzerland. In addition to the musical partnership with Elza Soares, he has appearances with João Donato, Céu and Baiana System. He won two awards as a new artist in 2018, by SIM and APCA, and received the Zumbi dos Palmares award from the Legislation of São Paulo for his influence on the anti-racist struggle in 2019. Recently, he signed the direction of narrative and soundtrack of a game and a feature film by the Danish director Sissel Morell Dargis.
