For this edition of Art Basel Paris, A Gentil Carioca (Booth A4) is pleased to present a project reflecting on the relationship between art and reading. The gallery revisits its historic 2006 exhibition “De repente, livros!” (“Suddenly, Books!”), in which Ernesto Neto, Laura Lima, and Marcio Botner invited artists to share books that shaped their personal journeys, presenting them as artworks within the exhibition space. In this new iteration for Art Basel Paris, we propose a fresh approach: inviting artists to create works inspired by books that have profoundly influenced their lives and artistic paths.
This theme invites reflection on the transformative power of books — not only as vessels of knowledge but also as essential tools for social, political, and cultural change. By fostering new ideas, reading transcends the written word, forging deep connections between thought and its transformation into visual form.
