A Gentil Carioca is pleased to present Lua/Luta, the next solo exhibition by Jarbas Lopes at our headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, curated by Catherine Bompuis. The opening takes place next Saturday, May 6, from 5 pm to 10 pm.
“Lua versus Luta (Moon versus Struggle), a project by Jarbas Lopes, opens up a space for experimentation, play and risk that imposes no bounds. Here, art and life are intertwined and everything seems to be built by walking, talking, playing, breathing: a process of continuous creation. The pulse of life directs the actions that unfold towards constant improvising, branching out, and the refusal of any specification that may fix the work in a single direction. Performances, models, sculptures, elastic paintings, utopian projects, and drawings appear to have been conceived in the same movement whose central axis is the body. The relationships woven between objects and actions, and between the individual and the social, give meaning to the work, rather than each object taken separately.[...] It’s an act of defiance that reaffirms the right to life and the power of the artistic act. [...] The will to transcend limits yearns for some other possible world. It is, therefore, a matter of symbolically reinscribing desire and consciousness in the body: Lua/Luta, Moon/Struggle.”
