In “Dia e Noite em Escorpião”, Jarbas Lopes presents a new large-scale work from the “Pintura Elástica” series, a research in which the artist investigates the constructive and material elements of painting—stretcher, fabric, elastic, color, and picture plane—expanding the canvas to the dimension of the object.

Dyed or painted elastic strips are woven to build the surface and the image of the work, wrapping around the stretcher and creating external and internal planes. By tensioning the limits of painting, the series establishes relationships between matter, space, and the body.

In the work presented at the ArtWall, this investigation takes on a new scale. A large weave of elastic material receives a monochromatic painting tensioned by spheres, in a composition that evokes the constellation of Scorpio and articulates relationships between matter, the body, and the cosmos.
