Between the Orinoco and the São Francisco (alpargata and xô boi) proposes a dialogue between two river-crossed territories—the Venezuelan Llanos and Brazil’s Northeast—as a metaphor for displacement and cultural continuity.
The work reflects on the continuities and transformations of migrant identity, evoking popular symbols such as the alpargata and the xô boi. The painting engages the idea of journey, revealing how the migrant experience produces processes of identity loss and gain: a stability is lost—a label, a place of origin—and a hybrid language, a performative repertoire, and a new form of belonging-in-transit are gained. These are the mechanisms through which a body in forced displacement is called upon to translate itself and its surroundings.
As part of the group exhibition, the work suggests a poetic crossing. By shifting the material of a migratory memory into painting, Oriana transforms an intimate archive into a public device for recognition and critique. The political force of the work lies in its ability to reveal that identity is not a fixed datum, but a surface in friction—a field in which cultures and practices are reconfigured, resist, and invent shared ways of existing.]
