Denilson Baniwa: Indigenous Artist Exposes Cultural Erasure

22 Aug 2022

I AM DENILSON Denilson Baniwa, an artist and member of the Baniwa Indigenous group from the state of Amazonas in Brazil, uses his art to expose how colonial representations have erased the culture and denied the humanity of Indigenous Americans. For the exhibition Reinventing the Américas, Baniwa collaborated with the Getty Research Institute to generate video artworks, installations, and interventions on historical objects. His contemporary interventions prompt us to see other sides to these representations.

Baniwa says, "When I'm faced with a colonial narrative, I'm provoked to find in it what's invisible to most people."
