Renata Lucas: a minor course correction: Dortmunder Kunstverein | Dortmund, Alemanha

In “a minor course correction,” Renata Lucas draws on recent transformations in Dortmund’s urban landscape to reflect on the ways in which the city’s spaces are occupied and appropriated. Presented at Dortmunder Kunstverein, the exhibition is directly connected to the history of the institution’s surroundings, which have been shaped by successive changes in use and configuration.

Among the references that inform the project is the former Union Brewery complex, which housed Utopia until 2020, a self-organized skatepark that became an important meeting place for the local skateboarding community and part of the city’s creative scene.

Building on this history, Lucas revisits “Falha” (2003/2024) and adapts the work so that it can be used as a skateboarding ramp. The intervention temporarily brings a practice associated with the spontaneous and collective occupation of the city into the institutional space, bringing together art, architecture, the body, and counterculture.

The project thus reflects on transformations in urban space and on how different forms of use can remain inscribed in the memory and configuration of a place.
