Arjan Martins | O Estrangeiro. 35º30'54" N, 12º34’48” E | Fondazione ICA Milano
A Gentil Carioca announces O Estrangeiro. 35º30'54" N, 12º34’48” E, Arjan Martins' first solo exhibition in Italy, on view at Fondazione ICA Milano and curated by Alberto Salvadori.
The exhibition title refers to the geographic coordinates of the island of Lampedusa,
an emblematic point in contemporary Mediterranean migration. Bringing together a significant group of recent paintings, Martins expands his ongoing investigation into migration, the African diaspora, and the enduring legacies of colonialism.
Throughout the works, the Atlantic Ocean emerges as a living archive, where histories
of displacement, exchange, and resistance continue to resonate in the present. Maps, vessels, navigational instruments, bodies, and landscapes populate layered compositions that connect memory and imagination, offering a reflection on belonging, movement, and representation.
