[The Mosquito Shrine are large embroidery works made on white mosquito net. Part of a wider research in which Vivian explores the history of the relationship between mosquito and humanity through sound, performance and visual works, The Mosquito Shrine II depicts an uncanny encounter of mosquitoes and mankind in the context of war, provoked by the attempt of conquesting and taming tropical nature made by European colonizers.
Several testimonials and mid 17 hundred records tell stories of illness, fever, hallucination and death connected to the arrival in the "New World". In Vivian's work these collective memories are means to transform the mosquito into a symbol, a deranged paramilitary force partly representing the tamelessness of tropical nature and partly the man-made structures that allowed mosquitoes to be so ubiquitous and deadly: poorly-planned artificial dams, sugar plantations, slavery.]
