The works in the series “O Debate” are developed in the artist's reflection on representations in socio-political conjunctures. In his text, Jarbas mentions that “the presence of forces in society that insist on retrogression, with incidents that hinder and interrupt socio-political development, is reflected in Brazil with the rise of a government, unable to propose any other meaning than the deterioration of the Brazilian Republic and that of the destruction of the country's public and natural good. Faced with this situation, the Series O Debate finds material and willingness for the last work of the series, which continues the thought of releasing blockades in the political field, and opening channels that expand visions of ethics and aesthetics. The image construction for the central field of the political discussions makes use of electoral campaign advertising banners, thereby creating possibilities for visually interacting with this universe. Collecting the material on the street after the electoral campaigns, Jarbas began, in 98, to create works from the O Debate series. He uses a simple weaving technique to merge, in the weave, two photographs of different politicians who are chosen and associated at random, regardless of the candidates’ and the parties’ personification. Interlacing this poetic response, a personal energy is inserted into the final result of the transfigured image, the expression of the stranger, the fortress of the mirror, the other, the colors derived from synthetic materials and paints from the machines that paint classical portraits, the symbolisms, are abstracted intertwined on the screen. What emerges, with the experience of art, reaffirms the immediate importance that political exercise has, to reveal each individual’s political responsibility toward the collective and for the community."
