[Revisiting Western allegories of celestial bodies and the cosmos, Denilson Baniwa includes in his painting the figure of Baribóo, a character from Baniwa mythology. Baribóo is described as the wife of an Indigenous leader who, while pregnant, is destined to give birth to the first human beings on Earth.
Across various points of the canvas, the artist inscribes the names of sacred flutes, which refer to the creation of the first humans, according to Baniwa tradition. The painting also features symbols associated with pregnancy, femininity, and the shape of the universe, creating a complex visual cosmology.

At the center of the composition, the phrase “Before the world existed” refers to the book Umusï Pãrõkumu and his son Tõrãmü Këhíri, which recounts the origin of the universe and humanity from the perspective of the Desana people. In this context, the “time that did not exist” alludes to the primordial moment before the creation of the world and the cosmos.

The painting represents the genesis of the universe and the planets, with special attention to the planet Venus, as well as the origin of the Sun and Moon. According to the narrative, the Sun and Moon are a couple who created humanity. After a dispute over the power to control their child — humanity — they separate and come to inhabit the world in turns: one by day, the other by night.]
