[This work is a rereading of a drawing I made in 2018, after the death of my father. The work revealed itself after I had a consultation with sanãdora (healer) Flor Medrano, a Mayan indigenous person, in an ayahuasca ritual with Yaká Huni Kuin. I made the painting as an ointment, a spell, to remove the pain from inside myself. The pain I felt at that moment and the pain I’ve felt since. I have had arthritis since I was a teenager and I was going through a crisis while I was producing these paintings. I am still trying to make the pain pass through me, talk to me, flow out of me and turn into something else. Earthen Heart is also an ode to the lady of all heads, my mother in spirit, serpent-water in transmutation. It is an offering of communication between the sky and the earth, created to give thanks to life and the opportunity to be here.]
