[Arjan Martins invites us into a dialogue with the ocean, in conversation with the Black diaspora. Through his work, the Atlantic emerges as both an archive and a living memory, conveyed through images and poetic gestures that trace multiple crossings and movements. As the artist himself explains, “I try to transform voices and sounds from history books, written words, spoken words, and quotations into imaginary portraits.” His paintings suggest a formal renewal, focusing on vessels, symbols, colors, and collective Black figures that form networks of intertwined histories. Through this, Martins asserts a present-day racial consciousness, weaving together cultural elements, iconographies, and cartographies, while keeping Africa in deep resonance with Black Brazil.]
