[In Mariana Rocha’s paintings, the atom and the galaxy exist on the same scale. Her practice begins with an intuition sustained by biology and expanded by cosmology: the interior of the body is a moist, pulsating universe in constant metamorphosis. Veins radiate like constellations, cells unfold like stellar cocoons, and cilia brush against one another like celestial bodies in silent orbit. By traversing the skin—her own and that of other living organisms—the artist encounters the same luminous and dark matter that structures the cosmos, composed of particles, fissures, folds, and openings perpetually available to transformation.
Her paintings operate as interstellar passages, surfaces where flesh spirals until it reveals galaxies, and where outer space condenses until it can inhabit the trace of a single vein. Within this constant movement between the microscopic and the immeasurable, the organic and the ancestral, the artist suggests that to look closely at a living body—human or otherwise—is also to investigate the origins of all things.
Mariana Rocha paints the body's interior as though it held something no one has yet dared to name. There are galaxies within veins, atoms that open dimensions as vast as the space between stars, and the conviction that these two scales have never been as distant from one another as they seem. Surfaces fold, and flesh enters through the smallest opening. Smallness reveals something still simmering: a primordial broth where the cosmic and the organic coexist without the need for justification.
In the presence of Mariana Rocha’s works, bodies become imbued with overflow. Like open portals to a world inhabited by mystery and origin, they are bodies in metamorphosis, where visceral memories dance. What first appears to be the sea is already blood, already flesh, already molecules cast into space and time. Layers of skin and layers of paint are like surfaces folding into themselves, giving rise to universes within universes. References to ancestry and ethnic-racial relations gain strength and presence through organic forms and saturated colors, as though they evoke memories that resist oblivion through sheer force, through rupture, through fever. The silhouettes are not confined to their contours: they spill beyond their edges, undulate, and challenge the very space they inhabit.]
