Nise nasceu em Maceió em 1905, foi pioneira no tratamento terapêutico com a interação de animais entre pessoas enquanto os colegas médicos focavam em práticas violentas como a lobotomia e eletrochoques. Durante a intentona comunista foi denunciada por uma enfermeira por ter livros marxistas. A denúncia levou a sua prisão justo no mesmo presídio com Graciliano Ramos e Olga Benario, em 1936. Em 44 foi reintegrada ao serviço público e criou, no engenho de dentro, ateliês de pintura e modelagem para reatar os vínculos com a realidade dos pacientes através da expressão das imagens do inconsciente.

During the communist attempt she was denounced by a nurse for having Marxist books. The denounce led to her imprisonment in the same prison with Graciliano Ramos and Olga Benario, in 1936. In 44 she was reinstated to the public service and created, in the neighborhood of Engenho de Dentro, painting and modeling workshops to recreate the links with the patients' reality through the expression of images of the unconscious.
