"Ágatha" is a painting where Arjan Martins takes as reference the story of 8-year-old Agatha Vitória Sales Félix, shot in the back at the Favela do Alemão in October 2019 - while returning home with her mother in a van and crossing a violent police operation - and creates a portrait of w family blessing and farewell.

A critique of disrupted childhood and apartheid by institutional power - which has been killing hundreds of black people in the city of Rio de Janeiro - "Ágatha" canvas, as well as other works by the artist, reveal political claims in pictorial spaces. Equity rights for black bodies, the basic right to day care centers, parks, libraries, and transportation appear on Arjan's canvases as images of absence. Art is a mean of communication and social demands for the artist, who paints the right to life through meaningful representations.
