[The themes in the paintings are old acquaintances of the artist: migrations - especially those caused by the slave trade - and the question of ethnic identity. His already established characters are repeated, creating a reflection on identity and representation. This is the case, for example, of Luísa Mahin, an ex-slave who had her enfranchisement purchased and mother of Luiz Gama, a Brazilian abolitionist writer. Luísa was an important participant in the Malês Revolt - which took place in Salvador in 1835.]
