Com a personalidade marcada pela intensidade e radicalidade, Heleny foi do teatro popular a militância política. A emissão do decreto do AI-5, em 68, fez com que seu trabalho como professora e diretora de teatro fosse suspenso. Se organizou então com a Vanguarda Popular Revolucionária (VPR), em 1969, usando o codinome de Lucy. Logo em 1970, foi presa e torturada durante a Operação Bandeirantes e existe o relato de que foi assassinada na Casa da Morte, em Petrópolis. Seu corpo nunca foi encontrado. A versão do serviço de polícia a declarou como uma foragida e procurada, em vez de desaparecida política, e vítima do estado. Hoje seu caso é investigado pela comissão da verdade.
O Serviço Nacional de Informações (SNI), divulgou em 76 um documento que atestava que Heleny seria utilizada como "pombo correio" da militância e operava junto de “perigosos terroristas”. Neste mesmo ano, a Federação Democrática Internacional das Mulheres dirigiu ao diretor da divisão de direitos humanos, em Genebra, uma declaração que atestava a violação de direitos humano que ocorria naquele período no Brasil.

She could have been one of the greatest theater directors in Brazil if her career had not been violently interrupted by the military regime.
With a personality marked by intensity and radicalism, Heleny went from popular theater to political activism. The issuance of the AI-5 decree, in 68, meant that her work as a teacher and theater director was suspended. In 1969, using the codename of Lucy, she decided to take part in the Popular Revolutionary Vanguard (VPR). Almost straight after in 1970, she was arrested and tortured during Operação Bandeirantes and there is a report that she was murdered at the Casa da Morte (Death House), in Petrópolis. Her body was never found. The police service version declared her a fugitive and wanted, rather than a missing political activist and victim of the state. Today her case is being investigated by the truth commission.
In 1976 the National Information Service (SNI) released a document that claimed that Heleny was used as a "pigeon carrier" by the militancy and operated with "dangerous terrorists". That same year, the International Democratic Federation of Women addressed a statement to the director of the human rights division, in Geneva, that attested to the human rights violations that occurred in that period in Brazil.
Great respect for the struggle and memory of Heleny, her birthday is March 13th!
