Ana Maria was a Brazilian guerrilla and communist activist. She joined the Faculty of Fine Arts at UFRJ and during the university life she became a member of the National Liberation Action (ALN - clandestine political group organized by communists to combat the dictatorship installed in the country in 1964).
Recruited by ALN, she was transferred to SP. On June 14, 1972, Ana was having lunch with 3 more guerrillas in the Mooca neighborhood when they were surprised by a military siege and a shooting started. Only one of her comrades managed to escape with life. A 2-year-old child was hit in the leg. On June 15, 1972, the newspapers “O Globo”, “Estado de São Paulo” and “Jornal do Brasil” released the news calling them terrorists, but it is known how much this type of news represents an error by which society has a chance to understand the struggle for emancipation. The bodies were not sent to the morgue directly and when Ana Maria entered the morgue her body was naked, with a fracture in the left femur, but her death was not caused by that. There are many contradictions in the reports, considering possible torture after the shooting. Even officially killed by the military government, a year later in 1973, she was sentenced to twelve years in prison. Today her name baptizes a square in Bangu, neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro, and a municipal day care center in São Paulo, opened in March 1992.
