[With a sensitive gaze, this series of small paintings reveals Miguel Afa’s attentive observation of the interaction between light and color. During his residency in Rome, the artist walked through different places at various times of the day, transforming his observations into paintings that evoke landscapes and architecture within synesthetic atmospheres. Each work results from the encounter between these elements and the artist’s sensibility, shaped by his experience of perceiving light—an experience that transforms the way we see spaces, buildings, and nature itself.
On the path leading to the Giardino degli Aranci, Afa observed a chromatic relationship between the yellow of the sunlight, the bluish-gray sky, and the trees set against the urban landscape of Rome: “the sun was still preparing to leave.” In this scene, the ruins of the Palatine emerged in the artist’s view, their presence blending into the luminous atmosphere of the city.
