In his wooden sculptures, Newton Santanna carbonizes and marks different faces with gouge incisions. The gesture refers to the Yorubá tradition of scarification, in which facial scars were used to identify people from the same group, especially to recognize others in conflict situations. This practice is also related to the search for identity, but this time it is an identity forged through belonging to the Yorubá people - not conceived by the subtraction of whiteness.
