[On her first solo show in Rio de Janeiro in 2019 “Yellow Fever”, Vivian creates fictions to debate the historical roots of the current American mosquito population. A sound system modelled purely from rapadura (Brazilian word for “panela”, the raw cane sugar) called “Sesmaria Soundsystem” is a major technical effort by Vivian’s team to reinterpret sugar cane derivatives into sound reproduction media. The period of development of the first models took approximately 6 months of trial and error in a process that combined the observation of the chemistry of rapadura, the constraints of audio and the challenges of conservation, due to how impermanent this material can be in a tropical environment such as Rio de Janeiro.
Realising that the first epidemics of yellow fever and mosquito-borne diseases had their epicentre in the colonial sugar economy,
Vivian proposed that the rapadura’s material echoes the uncomfortable sound of mosquitoes, accompanied by the typical sugar cane foliage and burning noises, as well as the music of mestizo flutes “Pife”. These flutes were engaged in profane religious processions in the same period of the first yellow fever epidemics, the mid 1700s. The soundtrack is entirely composed by the artist with sounds of real mosquitoes captured by biologists, mosquito sounds generated by software programmed by herself and other composition resources]
