- Denilson Baniwa

["The work K-Drama draws from the universe of impossible-love soap operas, in the style of Romeo and Juliet, where characters belong to rival families, very different social classes, or live in distant places. Korean doramas often explore these types of love and the overcoming of obstacles that prevent the characters from fully experiencing their relationships.

To create this piece, I started from an engraving by Theodor de Bry, which depicts a ritual lament — a practice found in various cultures — specifically surrounding a man who will be killed in a Tupinambá anthropophagic ritual. In this scene, women mourn the man within a ritualistic context. I extracted a portion of this engraving and incorporated it into the work, but shifted its meaning: instead of a ritualistic lament, or a lament for the one about to be sacrificed, these figures are shown crying while watching a dorama unfold.

The work also includes a phrase in Nheengatu, which, in Portuguese, can be understood as a playful reference to a song by Djavan: “A sad day or a rainy day is a good day to call your friends to watch a dorama.” Below this, the piece evokes the idea of thoughts directed toward someone, as if the characters are projecting their own love stories onto the narrative they are following, perhaps comparing themselves with what they are watching in this Korean soap opera." - Denilson Baniwa]
