[O Roubo das Flautas Sagradas (The Theft of the Sacred Flutes), part of the "Rito de Passagem" (Rite of Passage) series, represents the ritual insertion of a person captured by the Tupinambás into the community, in preparation for sacrifice and ritual consumption. In this context, integration is symbolized by a marriage ceremony, where the captured person is united with a wife, usually a close relative of their captor.
The narrative of the Sacred Flutes is part of Baniwa mythology, as it is in other Brazilian indigenous cultures. These flutes, made from the bones of the ancient creator gods, are the center of a gender dispute over the power to maintain the balance of the world, reflecting the cosmological and social importance of rituals and sacred objects in indigenous traditions.]
